So, I’m struck as I’m watching a promo for Food TV’s new show, Extreme Cuisine, that it sounds JUST LIKE the Travel Channel’s Bizarre Food.
Blurb from the Travel Channel’s Bizarre Food page: “Unmasking an aspect of dining out that will make you think twice before ordering off the menu, and utilizing his knowledge of all things edible, Andrew Zimmern is on a quest to find the world’s most bizarre foods. Andrew knows that one man’s poison is another man’s delicacy, but he isn’t afraid to poke a little fun at the local fare or himself.
Blurb from the Food Network’s Extreme Cuisine page: Jeff Corwin has encountered amazing things on his travels around the world, and now he sets his sights on eating them! In this one-hour special, the renowned anthropologist and passionate foodie tears through Thailand on a radical culinary adventure illustrating how exotic foods and customs have molded the country’s culture.
I realize that there are no new ideas and that the Food Network has fallen behind both Bravo and the Travel Channel in producing edgy programs, but c’mon guys (or gals).
OK, so I was wrong. It was really really good. Edgy, unexpected, entertaining. My first reactionwas that this doesn’t belong on the Food Network. But give them their props. I’d watch another episode in a different country (first one was Thailand – how fish sauce is made was a revelation). Hope there are more episodes to come. Another glass of Chardonnay but no water bugs.
