Bloody Marys on the deck

It is the first real spring day. Seventy-five degrees and sunny on our deck, which is high above the street and surrounded by forest. Buds are starting to appear on the Japanese cherry trees and a faint breeze stirs the wind chimes.

Is it wrong to have a Bloody Mary at 4 in the afternoon? Is it Friday yet? Well, almost. Perhaps if I accompany it with a bit of Brie and some crackers. How you mix your Bloody Mary depends on the day you’re having. Light on stress? Vodka about a quarter way up the glass. Heavy duty, over-the-moon, hard-ball day? You might sneak the vodka halfway up. Don’t worry. I sip it. Slowly. I consider the Bloody Mary mix a vegetable, so it’s nutritious.

The Brie? Set it out until it begins to ooze. Oh, yes. I have been known to set it in the microwave for about 15 seconds just to speed up the process. I would not say my blog posts become more poetic and lyrical after a few sips of a Bloody. But maybe they do. Or maybe I just think they do. And that’s all the matters, isn’t it?

Sometimes life requires a little liquid insulation, something to just take the edge off.  While you are indulging in your other bad habit, having a few puffs on the deck because your house is for sale and you can’t smoke inside. Talk about taking the edge off.  Let me tell you it was no picnic on the deck when it was 35 degrees and windy.

But sometimes it’s just 75 degrees and you’ve had a long week and it’s time for a Bloody Mary. At 4 in the afternoon.

  1. Like you, I think a Bloody Mary is health food and therefore all times are appropriate, especially sitting on the deck watching spring unfold.
